Assessment 1: learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
WWW: This is a very solid first assessment- well done! It's clear you have studied media before with your focus on the text in Q1. The challenge now is to push towards those top levels in every question.

EBI: -In Q2 you need more focus on social and cultural contexts. we'll look at this is class.
        - In Q3 genre theory would push you towards top levels.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Q1:Narrative codes suggest action, violence and confrontation – genre of order (Shatz)
Q2:In the Ill Manors poster the character possibly reflects social concerns over criminal gangs in
urban settings.
• Nike advert is deliberately ambiguous with character’s anonymity allowing anyone to
imagine themselves as the winner of the ‘Showdown’, working hard to succeed.
Q3:Genre important for audiences: expectations of narrative,
Genre important for producers/industries: ‘template’ for producers; attracting audiences;

3) Read this exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly different paper in terms of the question wording and also had an additional question 4 (we've updated it to better reflect recent exams). Identify at least one potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper that you could have mentioned in your assessment.
Q1 - Todorov's equilibrium theory
Q2 - Ethnicity of the protagonists in both media products
Q3 - Abercrombie quote

4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.
Todorov: equilibrium
Character theory: Propp
Enigma and Action Codes - Roland Barthes
Genres of order and integration
Neale: “Repetition and difference”

5) Identify your weakest question and write three bullet points that would improve on your original response. Use the mark scheme and exemplar paper to identify these points - particularly focusing on the anticipated content and the top level descriptors.
- Using more media theories in my answer (Todorov and Propp)
- Using more examples of narrative theory from the media products
- Using more media terminology
