Magazine front cover - Learner response

1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 8

Estimated A Level coursework grade: C / D

WWW: You have created and submitted a magazine cover but are lacking detailed planning and evaluation – these elements are an important part of the project and a great lesson for your future coursework. Your cover is clearly recognisable as a copy of Vogue and the central image has real potential – just a bit of Photoshop editing could have turned this into a top, top cover shot! I like how you’ve tried to use typography in the Vogue style too.

EBI: There are a few areas we need to work on. Firstly, the image – just cropping in slightly to make it a closer shot would have made a huge difference. The top and right of the image (with the wall/ceiling etc. in shot) needs to be cropped out. This would have left you with a brilliant plain background for the title and cover lines. On this front, you are lacking additional cover lines and the main flash you have on there is in white text which isn’t always legible (when it appears against the model’s costume). These are all excellent lessons for the coursework next year when it is likely we will be designing a music magazine alongside a video production.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)
The camera shot could've been a medium to match the other covers
Good application of knowledge and understanding media language

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?
Apply more knowledge and understanding of media language in order to get more marks and reach the next level.

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?
focus on visual appeal and the advice i would give it to spend time researching prior to gt better results
